The difference is not much in each plan however lets say for the sake of argument you drive 400 miles. On the first plan you are making 111.15 in taxable pay, and 2.85 in non taxable pay. For arguments sake lets say tax was at 25% your take home would be 86.21 total. on the second plan at 0.30 cents a mile on the same distance and perameters you are making a total of 90 dollars.

Not correct. All income (with a few exceptions such as some Gilts) in the UK is taxed at source. You used to be able to specify gross interest with a business account but not sure if that is correct now.
Also I am sure you can get paid gross if you are a non-taxpayer, like under 18.

I'm currently in graduate school and under-employed. I'm already relying on student loans to pay my rent, and in the Pittsburgh area housing market, it's possible to find a house that would be cheaper or the same in terms of a monthly mortgage payment than my rent is currently. Additionally, I plan to stay in public service once I graduate - which means I'll be poor, but I'll also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Plan after 10 years. That also means I'll be likely to qualify for an income-based repayment plan, which means that once I am fully employed again, I likely won't be paying an exorbitant amount for my loans... unless of course I strike it rich in the non-profit business... yeah, right.

So, my thoughts are this: Take out up to $10,000 from my retirement plan for a down payment on the house (which you can do without paying your typical 20% early withdraw penalty, apparently) and potentially take some of the student loan surplus that I have to add a little to that if I need to. Of course, I'll still be living on my student loans which is less than ideal, but at least I'll be moving toward building some equity in a home rather than just throwing it to a landlord. And I figure it might be smarter to act now while my loan debt isn't quite outrageous yet.

But I'm not a financial expert. Is this totally crazy, or is there someone else out there who would advise me to do the same?

- You will NOT qualify for a mortgage since you need to show 2 yrs of tax returns, pay stubs and credit history. You have none of these. You would be paying 6% on student loans and cannot deduct that on taxes as a home owner . Fiscally disastrous
